How to become a supplier to Government

Did you know that there are over 16,000 NSW Government and other eligible buyers that spend about $15 billion on goods and services each year?

Becoming a supplier to Government can provide certainty, and assist with business growth.  While people are often reluctant to head down that path because of the perceived complexity, the ProcurePoint NSW website and its focus on making it easier for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to get involved is a step in the right direction.

There are several ways SMEs can engage with the Government so they are aware of opportunities, both now and into the future. The ProcurePoint website contains information about how the Government makes purchasing decisions and it also contains some great information about prequalification schemes and how to register.

There are several sections on the ProcurePoint site that will assist business owners. We have highlighted a few elements below:

  • SMEs can access information that is relevant to them by clicking through to information specific to SMEs from the landing page of the website.
  • Goods and services can be supplied to Government via prequalification schemes, contracts with individual agencies or agencies can purchase directly from suppliers.
  • SMEs can find out about opportunities by registering for notifications that will be directly emailed to them. This can be done by filling in a form on the NSW eTendering website.
  • A list of current and future opportunities is also detailed on the website. This includes whole of government contracts, the prequalification schemes, and panels.  Users can also search the list of opportunities to find one that fits with their particular offering.  You can have a look at what’s currently available by clicking here.
  • Prequalification involves the completion of an eligibility checklist that details an organisation’s performance record along with the financial and technical capacity to undertake projects. Once SMEs are prequalified, they may be considered for future opportunities that match their skills and expertise.

Suppliers can also include their goods or services on the NSW Government’s purchasing catalogue system. Further details about this avenue of engagement is available here.

While the website contains a lot of information, there is a support and self-help area that will assist SMEs navigate to the right information.

It’s not only state government that advertises opportunities for small businesses, the Federal government and local Councils will also regularly advertise tender opportunities so it’s worthwhile monitoring websites and signing up for alerts so that request for tender opportunities can be emailed to you as they become available.
